Company company directors elevated U.K. stage this season

'One Guy, Two Guvnors' was modified from 1700s laffer 'Servant of Two Masters.'Looking back, 2011 was the season in the helmer, to date as U.K. theater is anxious. In venues small , large, company company directors didn't a great deal revive shows as reinvent them. For proof, have a look in the year's most spoken-about smash "One Guy, Two Guvnors."The now Broadway-bound comedy was the year's best new play and, concurrently, will be a re-working. Playwright (and former standup) Richard Bean needed "Servant of Two Masters," an 1700s comedy by Carlo Goldini, and moved it for the faintly lower-at-heels seaside capital of scotland- Brighton inside the Beatles-era sixties. It had been, however, not essentially an update. Bean's laugh-a-minute script had inventive portrayal together with a galloping lunacy its very own. Plus it was presented with rampant energy and callous precision by National Theater helmer Nicholas Hytner, who added tunes by Grant Olding. This column's Helmer of year prize, however, visits Make the most of Ashford for his riveting Donmar Warehouse revival of O'Neill's "Anna Christie." It absolutely was offered-out before it opened up up due to the presence inside the cast of Jude Law, who paid out fans getting work-best performance.Ashford's production needed the problematic play -- it wears its thematic concerns under lightly -- and gave it intensity and immensity. The first sort is straightforward inside the up-close-and-personal, 250-chair Donmar the 2nd was greatly aided having a breathtakingly bold design by Paul Wills, which presented an unwritten storm at sea as you're watching awestruck audience. The expansion couldn't immediately make the most of its success due to the cast's obligations elsewhere. However, Ashford told Variety that, if organizing might be worked out, there's fascination with the show acquiring a Gotham transfer. Ashford themselves is quite twisted up in 2012 choreographing Michael Grandage's Rialto revival of "Evita," developing happens tuner version of "Finding Neverland" -- destined with an not named U.K. regional theater in Fall 2012 -- and helming a Broadway play that's not been introduced.Other helmers, too, made their mark coming back to classics. James Macdonald didn't just shepherd an ideal cast through Edward Albee's "A Fragile Balance" within the Almeida, he created a rapt stillness that allowed audiences to find out this, not the higher volatile "Who's Frightened of Virginia Woolf?" is Albee's masterpiece.More all of a sudden, "Accolade" a forgotten 1950 play about private behavior and political existence, was presented with a revelatory revival by new kid available on the market Blanche McIntyre within the Finborough Theater, a little but terrific venue that consistently punches over the weight.McIntyre was the invention of year. Still in their 20s, she combines dynamic visual strength with acute sensitivity to stars and textual detail and flow. There's talk from the 2012 West Finish transfer for "Accolade" -- the country's Theater wanted it too -- but she'll have to fit that around other obligations, plus a double-bill of latest plays within the Rose rose bush Theater and, intriguingly, a revival of "The Seven Year Itch" at regional theater Salisbury Playhouse.Helmer Jonathan Munby also acquired highly not only getting a fierce output of the Jacobean tragedy "Ienc Pity She's a Whore" at West Yorkshire Playhouse, though a greater-octane revival of Sondheim's "Company" at Sheffield's Crucible theater, who've the following existence london, with talk from the fall transfer."Company" and Jonathan Kent's revival of "Sweeney Todd" virtually stole the 2010 tuner honors. In the far-from-vintage year for big new commercial musicals, even Cameron Mackintosh couldn't turn "Betty Blue Eyes" in to a hit. Despite rave notices, it shuttered after fighting through six several days. Getting a title change and several reworking, it warrants the following. Its helmer, Richard Eyre, however, rounded out his year getting a fantastically judged output of Nicholas Wright's new bioplay "All the the Duchess" about Wallis Simpson, the Duchess of Windsor.Eyre's 2012, meanwhile, includes the year's most intriguing prospect. He'll helm a dance version of "Truly, Crazily, Deeply," the film with the late Anthony Minghella. Dramatic ballerina Viviana Durante will star in the production produced by Tim Hatley and lit by Neil Austin ("Red-colored-colored.") Opening on holiday inside the fall, it'll then play London's premier dance house, Sadler's Wells. Contact David Benedict at benedictdavid@mac.com

West Memphis 3 Sufferers Want Cinemax Documentary Excluded From Academy awards

Earlier this August, Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley -- better referred to as West Memphis 3 -- were launched from prison. The trio have been charged with killing three youthful boys in 1993, however questions came about throughout the trial and several wondered when they were wrongfully accused. 'Hugo' a 3D breakthrough for its team

Neither Martin Scorsese nor the top members of his creative team had done a 3D film before they embarked on "Hugo," but their first effort ended up garnering near-universal praise for the way they used the stereo medium to enhance the storytelling. Variety's Inside Production talked to "Hugo" production designer Dante Ferretti and cinematographer Robert Richardson.Interview with Dante Ferretti Variety:How many films have you done with Marty?Dante Ferretti: This is the eighth.Variety:And you hadn't done 3DFerretti:None of us had done 3D.Variety:What did you have to do differently?Ferretti: With 3D I had to be more careful with the foreground. You have to put more stuff in front of the camera. Once we started to build and make models, we looked and said things like, "Oh, maybe we need something more in the foreground, one more column here, a kiosk there." Day by day you understand better how to do 3D. Then we did some tests and saw we had to add even more stuff. The detail was very important, the clock tower, the smaller clocks, the machinery, the gears.Variety: So the job of the set decorator is critical.Ferretti:Yes. Francesca (Lo Schiavo) did a fantastic job. We were surrounded by objects in the caf, the kiosk, the toy shop, the Melies studio. Everything was built like it was during that period.Variety:Were you able to evaluate the quality of the 3D on the set?Ferretti:Yes, when we were shooting we could see everything in 3D. We had a big screen and glasses, so we could see if something was wrong. Variety:Where did you shoot?Ferretti:We build the entire movie on stages at Shepperton, Pinewood and Longcross (in the London area). We built everything from scratch - an entire train station, the lobby, platforms, and put a real train inside it. It was a huge job. The movie is set in Paris but we shot in Paris only five days. We recreated Paris in London.Variety: How long did you work on "Hugo"?Ferretti:I started in November, 2009 and finished in January, 2011.Variety: What are you working on now?Ferretti:I'm doing "The Seventh Son" with ("Mongol" director) Sergey Bodrov, and with Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore. After that I'll work again with Marty on "Silence."Interview with Robert RichardsonVariety:"Hugo" was your first 3D film. . . Robert Richardson: Yes. I was excited and also daunted. Not only was it my first 3D film, it was my first feature-length digital capture. Up to that point I had only used digital for commercials. We used the (Arri) Alexa camera on "Hugo." We had two Alexas on a Pace rig.Variety:Did you consider shooting on 2D and converting to 3D?Richardson:It was discussed primarily from the point of view of economics. We knew it was X amount of money to achieve 3D on-set, so the question was how much more time will be needed to do the conversion. But Marty always wanted to shoot with 3D, and for both of us it didn't make sense to shoot it any other way. Variety: What was it like shooting digital?Richardson:I embrace digital cinema, I didn't try to emulate film. My intention was first and foremost to provide a digital 3D presentation, second, a digital cinema 2D presentation, and finally a film presentation. Variety: Were you able to make the decisions on-set that you needed to?Richardson: Yes, we had 3D monitors and glasses, and the best part of the process was being able to make decisions based on the intent of the director so we could get him what he was looking for, whether it was a heightened depth of field, a shorter depth of field, whether to embrace the actors, and so on. Not being able to do so on-set makes very little sense to me.Variety: So for you, stereo capture doesn't stack up well against conversion?Richardson: It's a complicated question. If you ask me how Jim Cameron does a conversion, it will be excellent and exquisite. His knowledge of 3D is so fine, and he has the time and the finances to control it in a manner to get him exactly what he desires. For a filmmaker who doesn't have his level of expertise there's no question that 3D shooting on set is vital. And why would you hand your conversion work to another company? It makes no sense to me. Prince William Helps Rescue Shipwrecked Sailors In The Irish Sea

First Published: November 27, 2011 10:36 AM EST Credit: Getty Images LONDON, England -- Caption Prince William waves to the crowd as he arrives with Prince Harry for the Royal Wedding of Prince William to Catherine Middleton at Westminster Abbey in London on April 29, 2011 Prince William joined a frantic rescue mission Sunday after a cargo ship sank in the Irish Sea, leaving several crew members still missing. The second in line to the British throne, who is a Royal Air Force helicopter and known professionally as Flight Lt. William Wales, was aboard an aircraft which rescued two crew members early on Sunday, after their vessel suffered a cracked hull in gale force winds off the coast of north Wales. Britains ministry of defense said William had been co-pilot of the helicopter, which carried two people back to his base RAF Valley, on the Welsh island of Anglesey. Authorities said five people remain missing after the Swanland cargo ship, which had eight people on board and was carrying thousands of tons of limestone, sent a mayday call. Holyhead Coastguard said one body had been recovered from the sea, but that the fate of the other crew members was not yet known. We know that at least some of them are wearing immersion suits and have strobe lighting with them, however sea conditions are challenging at best, said Jim Green, a coastguard spokesman. Rescue helicopters from RAF Valley and from Dublin coastguard base in Ireland were initially sent to the scene, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northwest of the Llyn peninsula in north Wales. Helicopters from RAF Chivenor, in southwest England, and the Irish Coastguard are continuing to search for the missing crew, along with boats from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. Two RNLI lifeboats, along with four search and rescue helicopters and two other commercial boats, are searching for the remaining six crew, the RNLI said in a statement. Gale-force winds battered the Irish Sea during Sunday and the coastguard said it is believed the poor condition could have caused the incident. Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press. Golden Globes Preview: 'Tintin,' 'Cars 2' Faceoff in Animation Category

This story first appeared in the Dec. 2 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.our editor recommendsGolden Globes Preview: 'Tintin,' 'Cars 2' Faceoff in Animation CategoryGolden Globes TV Predictions from THR's Tim GoodmanGolden Globes Comedy vs. Drama Category Battle Rages OnWhy the Golden Globes Crawled Back to Ricky Gervais As red carpets go, the Globes' fashion gauntlet has historically been livelier and looser than the prim-and-proper Oscar arrivals. Globes-going actresses have broken the mold by wearing emerging or unknown designers, eschewing cumbersome gowns for party-hearty cocktail hemlines, showing scandalous skin and, in some cases, going completely off the grid. Who can forget Lara Flynn Boyle's pink chiffon tutu by L.A. designer David Cardona in 2003? Or Cameron Diaz -- nominated in 1999 for There's Something About Mary -- strolling down the carpet in a critically panned floral dressing gown? Years earlier, Whoopi Goldberg also made waves when she showed up in a bright yellow tracksuit the night she won for The Color Purple in 1986. And Cher famously wore a skintight shredded mini with mesh stockings when she received her 1984 Globe for Silkwood. PHOTOS: Golden Globes Party Pics But the Globes' fashion mood has recently shifted. Nominees like Nicole Kidman, Halle Berry, Jennifer Aniston, Charlize Theron, Salma Hayek, Cate Blanchett and Reese Witherspoon have upped the designer quotient with made-to-measure gowns by renowned couturiers Valentino, Yves St. Laurent, Chanel, Gucci, Nina Ricci, Dior, Armani Prive and Atelier Versace. The Globes have now become a critical stop in an Oscar hopeful's campaign for fashion glory: You have to dress like an Oscar winner to become an Oscar winner. This is why the 2012 Globes carpet will feature the latest runway trends -- white, pretty pastel and sorbet hues, fun floral prints, feminine taffeta, tulle, chiffon and lace gowns, demure sleek '20s flapper silhouettes -- and more statement-making couture from A-list designers than you can shake a stiletto at. PHOTOS: Golden Globes Red Carpet Style And because the Globes features an entertaining mix of film and TV stars, fashionistas are already looking forward to seeing what TV "It" girls Sofia Vergara and Julie Bowen (Modern Family), Christina Hendricks and January Jones (Mad Men), Claire Danes (Homeland) and Zooey Deschanel (New Girl) will wear to kick off the earliest moment of TV's seven-month long awards season. But it's this year's photogenic and youthful film ingenues-- Keira Knightley (A Dangerous Method), Rooney Mara (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo), Michelle Williams (My Week With Marilyn) and Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene) -- who are the anticipated style-setters. Still, let's hope perennial rule-breaker Helena Bonham Carter -- who wore a black lace Vivienne Westwood frock and different colored shoes last year -- will attend this year's Globes and add some classic individuality to the mix. Seal's Chechen Leader Birthday Bash Performance Questioned By Human Rights Group

While Hilary Swank and Jean-Claude Van Damme have taken heat from human rights groups for appearing at a lavish Oct. 5 party for Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, so far perhaps the highest-paid star to turn out on the occasion has gotten a pass.our editor recommendsHilary Swank, Jean-Claude Van Damme Slammed for Attending Birthday of Chechen Leader Human Rights Watch, which had previously denounced Swank and Van Damme for their appearances at a celebration feting Kadryrov on his 35th birthday, has sent an inquiry to Seal regarding his performance at the event. The organization has called on stars who attended the party to reimburse any money that they were paid to participate. "Ramzan Kadyrov is linked to a litany of horrific human rights abuses. It's inappropriate for stars to get paid to party with him. It bolsters his image and legitimizes a brutal leader and his regime. And getting paid to be part of such a lavish show in Chechnya trivializes the suffering of countless victims of human rights abuses there," the organization said. PHOTOS: Top 10 Highest Paid Music Artists The website Caucasian Knot says Rosa Pashaeva, head of the division of arts and educational institutions of the Ministry of Culture of the Chechen Republic, declined to estimate how much the talent was paid to appear. But a representative associated with one of those in attendance tells THR that normally celebrities are paid in the six figures to attend such events but any time a performance is involved, the rate rises to seven figures. In Seal's case, he may have gotten a stunning amount per song because Pashaeva reportedly said that he was supposed to perform for 30 minutes but sang only two songs because of time restrictions. Seal's publicist did not respond to THR's request for comment. "As for invited celebrities -- till the last day we didn't know exactly who would come and take part in celebrations," Pashaeva told the Caucasian Knot. "I wasn't involved in organizing the arrival of celebrities; but when they came, it was quite easy to deal with them," said Alvi Karimov, the head of the press-service of the Chechen president. "They eagerly communicated with citizens, took pictures with them, and even danced lezginka." As previously reported by THR, Van Damme stood on stage at the party and said, "I love you Mr. Kadyrov" while Swank said she was honored to be in Grozny and wished Kadyrov a "Happy Birthday." After Swank spoke, British violinist Vanessa-Mae performed for a reported half a million dollars. There were fireworks and performances by acrobats. The celebration was held on a floating stage on the River Sunzha; portraits of Kadyrov were displayed throughout the city. Related Topics Seal

Qwikster is Dead; Long Live Netflix?

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings probably wasn’t prepared for the earful (or Internetz-full) he received last month when he announced plans to spin-off Netflix’s DVD rentals into a new company called Qwikster. “It is clear that for many of our members two websites would make things more difficult,” he wrote in a blog post today. “So we are going to keep Netflix as one place to go for streaming and DVDs.” Read on for more flip-flopping, and rejoice? Hastings kept it short and sweet in Monday’s follow-up post, explaining that Qwikster, which was intended to have its own separate website requiring separate log-in information and film queues, will basically just not exist at all. “This means no change: one website, one account, one password… in other words, no Qwikster.” And: “While the July price change was necessary, we are now done with price changes.” Kudos to Hastings to listening to the people. But seriously; wasn’t the hubbub going to die down eventually? Shouldn’t he have stuck to his guns, if streaming is indeed the future? Moot questions at this point — unless Hastings has yet more changes of heart. And time will tell if his initial instinct to stay on the forefront of a changing market was the right, if unpopular, choice. Meanwhile: Looks like @Qwikster can go back to Tweeting about girls and being bored in school about 10,000 followers richer. [Netflix via Deadline]

Prohibition

'Prohibition'Produced by Florentine Films. Producers, Sarah Botstein, Ken Burns, Lynn Novick co-producer, Mike Welt company directors, Burns, Novick author, Geoffrey C. Ward.Ken Burns' PBS documentaries will always be stately, informative and chic, however the amount of resonance frequently comes from the extent that they think about, and fasten to, current trends and mores. "Prohibition" -- a five-hour, three-part collaboration with Lynn Novick, which PBS will air over successive nights -- works on counts, controlling to become very entertaining, full of amusing particulars and strongly related present day politics. If little else, "Boardwalk Empire" fans must notice like a study guide, however the bigger question of trying to legislate others' behavior appears as minty fresh like a Mojito. "Nothing so needs changing as other individuals habits" may be the Mark Twain quote that opens the beginning, properly subtitled "A Nation of Drunkards." The filmmakers go to recount how imbibing tremendous amounts was "as American as apple cake" within the nation's youth, before giving rise towards the temperance movement within the 1800s. Oddly enough, the push by "Drys" grew to become inextricably associated with women, a number of whom -- recently politically empowered -- later performed a job in causing the Volstead Act's demise. Gleam thread regarding hostility toward immigrants, along with a rift between metropolitan areas and rural towns. "Prohibition" author Geoffrey C. Ward offers an excellent ear for language, and also the roots of numerous familiar terms -- Skid Row, scofflaw, bootlegger -- are spread throughout. Gleam insightful scrumptious anecdotes, like how wealthy maker Adolphus Busch had Tiffany design custom home windows for that stable where he stored his horses. Part two stories how people brazenly circumvented what the law states, releasing a range of unintentional effects. The 3rd evening ("A Nation of Hypocrites") develops toward its eventual repeal -- all performed against a backdrop of colorful figures like Al Capone and George Remus who flouted enforcement. As always, Burns eschews the dishearteningly common documentary practice of pursuits (as near because he and Novick come is showing alcohol gradually put right into a glass), aesthetically illustrating the piece with still images and vintage video. Additionally they assemble the typical glittering variety of stars to lend their voices towards the cause, a group of historians and narrator Peter Coyote. The speaking heads include Daniel Okrent, the NY Times' former public editor, who authored a magazine around the subject. "When one for reds from the movement is people inspired by passion, and also the other is people inspired by commerce, passion will win," Okrent describes, in one of several findings with implications for present-day politics. Indeed, historians return repeatedly to the way the intransigence of "drys" unintentionally compromised their cause. In the event that seems to echo the present Tea Party movement, one suspects it's hardly any sort of accident. PBS has consistently permitted Burns to fresh paint on the giant canvas, and he's generally compensated that trust. Possibly foremost, his work (by extension, PBS) advantages of ahistorical pandering by shops like the History funnel, which makes it appear more rarefied and pristine in comparison. For the reason that context, it's worth hoisting a glass to "Prohibition."Camera, Buddy Squires editors, Tricia Reidy, Erik Ewers, Ryan Gifford music, Wynton Marsalis. 105 MIN.With: Daniel Okrent, Philip Bosco, Patricia Clarkson, Kevin Conway, Blythe Danner, Tom Hanks, Jeremy Irons, John Lithgow, Josh Lucas, Amy Madigan, Carolyn McCormick, Campbell Scott, Frances Sternhagen, Mike Waterston. REVIEW: Take Shelter Raises the Question, How Much Michael Shannon Is Too Much?

Casting Michael Shannon as a potential psychotic is a bit like crowing over the discovery that water is wet. And sure enough, in Jeff Nichols’s Take Shelter, Shannon gets his chance to go all bug-eyed and thin-lipped, to sweat through his clothes, to go ballistic on the neighbors, warning them that a big storm is coming and it’s going to wipe them out if they don’t get ready. Shannon has certainly cornered the cuckoo-bird market, and how you feel about Take Shelter will depend largely on how you respond to his patented nutcase technique. But in terms of overall filmmaking, writer-director Nichols — who previously made the 2007 Shotgun Stories — knows what he’s doing. He’s so adept at layering eerie semi-naturalistic details — skies that seem to be glowering at the whole human race, rain beating down with the fury of millions of tiny, punishing fists — that I wanted to stick with him to see where he was going with it all. His idea — that nature is both inside and outside of us, and in neither case is it something to trifle with — is unsettling at its core. Shannon is precisely the actor you’d first think to cast in this material — which may be the problem. Shannon’s character, a hardworking Midwestern family man named Curtis, has been having apocalyptic dreams and visions: Birds arrange themselves strange formations in the sky; yellow rain falls from above, as if God were expressing his dissatisfaction with mankind by taking one giant whiz all over the heartland. Is all of this really happening? Or is Curtis suffering the early stages of paranoid schizophrenia? His wife, Samantha (Jessica Chastain), is baffled by his behavior: First he turns the gentle, loyal family dog outside after dreaming that the dog attacks him; then he takes out a massive loan to spiff up the family’s tornado shelter in preparation for the big biblical showdown he knows is coming. Samantha is none too happy about either of those things, particularly the latter, considering the couple’s young daughter (Tova Stewart), who is deaf, has some upcoming heavy-duty medical expenses. The first third of Take Shelter is suitably unnerving. Nichols knows how to use the landscape (and CGI-enhanced weather) to build a sense of dread: The family’s modest house, somewhere out in rural Ohio, ought to be cozy and safe, but it seems isolated and exposed, a sitting target in an expanse of brownish grass and grayish sky. Even the more peaceful sequences — like the one in which Samantha and her young daughter gaze out the window while a rainstorm rages outside — are draped with ominous portent. But I can’t help wondering how Take Shelter would play with a different star, one who hasn’t already done the pop-eyed nutter routine to death. With Shannon, I feel I’ve seen it too many times before, and once — even just his turn in William Friedkin’s Bug — would have been more than enough. The economics of star casting aside, what would Take Shelter have been like with James McAvoy or Mark Wahlberg or Jake Gyllenhaal at its center? Even though the picture ends with a question mark, Shannon still manages to give the whole game away in the first frame — his very presence shows you where the movie is headed. On the other hand, Jessica Chastain, in one of her 1,001 movie roles this year, is far more restrained and more moving. She plays a character whose common sense is commingled with fear — and that, as it turns out, is probably the combination she needs to survive. Chastain is this year’s “it” girl for sure, but one of her gifts is her ability to portray regular people without playing down to them: In Take Shelter you never get the sense that she’s uglied herself up to play real folk, to get down with the people. She’s always effortlessly believable, whether her character is hustling in the kitchen to get breakfast together for her daughter or gazing into her husband’s eyes, trying to fathom the weird secrets he has locked in his cranium. Chastain’s face, whether she’s expressing wonder or anxiety, is the movie’s most reliable weather report and its most sensitive lightning rod: Looking at that face, you’d have no reason to believe that either God or his good pal Mother Nature could be angry with her. The suggestion that not even she can escape their wrath is what makes Take Shelter so disquieting. Imposing and Intense, Michael Shannon Stands Out

NEW YORK (AP) Sitting down for breakfast on a recent rainy NY day, Michael Shannon was uncertain about the prospect of food."They say you're supposed to eat breakfast," he said, pondering the option. "You don't eat breakfast, you'll go crazy."The possibility wasn't a remote one: Shannon has never shown a reluctance to do exactly that.In parts like the obsessively upright, self-flagellating federal agent on HBO's "Boardwalk Empire," the unbalanced, truth-telling neighbors' son of "Revolutionary Road," and in "Take Shelter," the actor's latest, a small-town Ohio family man increasingly haunted by apocalyptic nightmares, Shannon has unflinchingly followed his characters into paranoia, anxiety and derangement. In the end, coffee was judged sufficient, but nothing close to insanity followed.Shannon, 37, dressed casually in a Jesus Lizard T-shirt (music was his first love) and a flannel shirt, proved that it's not his imposing size 6'3" with a rock square jaw or his ability to dramatically come unhinged that has made him one of the most admired actors around. It's his underlying sensitivity his empathy for his characters and his attuned senses to his surroundings that more properly defines Shannon."The characters I play, it's not like they're all in the asylum, separate from the rest of us," he says. "I react to things. I think the world is an unsettling place. I have some anxiety about it. Maybe that comes through in what I do. But it's not something I'm attempting to do."The source of Shannon's paranoia in "Take Shelter," written and directed by Jeff Nichols, is the movie's mystery. Is his character losing it, like his mother did at his age? Or is the perceived threat real and outside his family?Shannon's performance, a carefully calibrated ball of tension and encroaching mania, has already earned him an underdog place in this year's Oscar prognostications for best actor. After years of character actor and stage work, it's the fullest cinematic display yet of Shannon: unadorned and still powerfully intense."I was really floored by his power and stillness," says Jessica Chastain, who plays his wife in the film. "He has this great source of energy, but the stillness contains this great power and intense emotion."Shannon grew up primarily in Lexington, Ky. His parents divorced when he was very young, so he spent time between Lexington (where his mother lived) and Chicago (where his father lived). He eventually moved to Chicago full-time and fell into the city's flourishing theater world. He particularly connected with then-nascent playwright Tracy Letts, starring in his "Killer Joe" and "Bug," in which he played a paranoid Gulf War veteran.Acting appealed to him for its freedom to behave in ways that would be considered inappropriate off-stage."It wasn't an attention thing," he says. "I never really gave a crap. I never really cared if people clapped or not. It's a way to travel. It's a form of travelling in another reality or circumstance."When he moved to Los Angeles to pursue film work, he found small roles in "Groundhog Day," ''Jesus' Son," ''Vanilla Sky," ''8 Mile" and a number of Jerry Bruckheimer films ("Pearl Harbor," ''Bad Boys II," ''Kangaroo Jack").Nichols was among the first to recognize Shannon's ability. Having seen footage of him at the writers' workshop Sundance Labs, he was hit by a lightning bolt: "This guy needs to be in every movie I make," he said to himself.Nichols cast him in his low-budget debut, 2007's "Shotgun Stories," a kind of tale of slacker revenge. Having now twice directed him, Nichols noted he never once saw Shannon with a script in hand, but he always knew it backward and forward."His goal is to put something honest up on screen," says Nichols. "It's funny: Though we don't talk about it beforehand or rehearse, as soon as I yell 'cut' and move on, that's when the conversation starts. 'How'd it go? How'd it do?'"In choosing his parts, Shannon is generally drawn to the material, comparing good writing to a Faberge egg that needs an actor's protection. In the case of "Take Shelter," he identified with Nichols' (and the script's) anxiety over starting a family. Shannon lives in Red Hook, Brooklyn, with his partner, actress Kate Arrington, and their 3-year-old daughter."In my 20s and the first third of my 30s, I lived a very gypsy lifestyle," says Shannon. "It didn't really matter where I lived. I didn't give a rat's ass. Now I have a home and a family. ... So it's on my mind."Shannon acknowledges he's been pigeonholed for playing disturbed characters and notes it's "something I struggle with.""I'm certainly not going to do a $5,000 movie about a serial killer ... about a guy who grinds people up or saws people," says Shannon. On "Boardwalk Empire," which is now airing its second season, his character, Nelson Van Alden has morphed from an Elliot Ness-type, to a religious zealot who punishes himself for his lust for a woman not his wife. In the show's first season, he had a remarkable scene where he baptized a double-crossing colleague, drowning him."When Michael commits, he commits," says "Boardwalk" creator Terence Winter. "We look at Nelson Van Alden as this religious zealot who maybe has a screw loose. Michael's approaching it from the inside out, as a real man."In the much anticipated upcoming Superman film, Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel," he'll play General Zod, the villain earlier played by Terence Stamp. Thinking of working that film, which is currently shooting, in comparison to "Take Shelter," Shannon says: "There's not a word for how different it is.""Even though six months after I shoot it, when I'm doing press, they'll say, 'So, another evil bastard,'" Shannon says. "I'll be like, 'Yeah, but it was interesting.' And I'll explain why it was interesting."Copyright 2011 Associated Press. All rights reserved. Watch the Impressionistic U.K. Teaser Trailer for Andrea Arnold's Wuthering Heights

“This is something of a pointillist Wuthering Heights, a story told more with dots and dashes than with long, bold strokes,” wrote Movieline’s Stephanie Zacharek after seeing Andrea Arnold’s bold take on the classic novel upon its Venice Film Festival debut. Now that the film’s first teaser has debuted, you can see for yourself what she meant, windswept longing gazes and foggy moors and elemental snatches of scenery and all. The teaser has but one spoken line — “You broke my heart… you killed me” — spoken by Kaya Scodelario, a British actress whom I’ve been curious to see more from since her days on the original Skins. She plays Cathy to James Howson’s Heathcliff, though we only see them in the teaser in glimpses along with their younger counterparts. A visceral sense of nature comes through; if ever a trailer used the sound of wind well, it’s this one. But between that, the dim natural lighting, and the flashes of poetic visual imagery (not to mention the near-square 1.37:1 aspect ratio) it’ll be a tough teaser to crack for most audiences, even the ones familiar with the novel. Verdict: Still: Andrea Arnold. Kaya Scodelario. A black Heathcliff. Moody landscapes. I’m totally in, whenever new distributor Oscilloscope sets its TBA 2012 date. [via First Showing]

Toronto biz might be brisk

"You are Next" (above) and "Rampart" are required to attract bidders in the Toronto Film Festival. One of the eclectic mixture of photos in the fest is laffer "Peace, Love and Misunderstanding." Woodsy Harrelson in "Rampart" An positive Amber Entertainment and Haxan Films fully funded their horror film "Lovely Molly" instead of sell off foreign privileges. The 36th Toronto Film Festival will launch Thursday having a better outlook than in the prior three iterations. Riding a wave of strong sales that started captured, folks headed to Toronto are particularly more upbeat -- a clear, crisp turnaround from 2009 and 2008. A flurry of developments associated with Toronto is going to be revealed now, about the heels from the Weinstein Co.'s Tuesday announcement that it's developing a new label to create content to digital and traditional platforms concurrently, employing former Magnolia executives Tom Quinn and Jason Janego to mind the initiative. The duo will attend Toronto by having an eye toward obtaining films for that fledging label. Company needs to debut its first title underneath the new label within the first 1 / 2 of 2012."Individuals are recognizing that Toronto is a superb starting point selling new films," stated FilmNation Entertainment topper Glen Basner. "Equity is returning after standing on (the) sidelines, and that is a double-edged sword, as although it enables more movies to obtain made, it does not always mean more good movies. For the time being, the economic crisis made purchasers a lot more conservative, however the cycle can change.InchBecause the major galleries have significantly reduce their production slates, distribution pipelines have opened up to indies proffering low- to midrange-allocated films. Sundance, Berlin and Cannes already saw better-than-expected marketplaces, and following the stunning achievements of "Black Swan" and "The King's Speech," the summer time B.O. tallies for Woodsy Allen's "Night time in Paris" have bolstered the overall sense that this is an excellent time for you to be an indie. An eclectic mixture of game titles has emerged with elevated anticipation for sales throughout Toronto: horror projects "You are Next" and "The Awakening" relationship dramas "360," "Shame," "Take This Waltz" and "Winnie" police drama "Rampart" enivronmental thriller "The Hunter" and comedies "Peace, Love and Misunderstanding" and "Buddies With Kids."Amber Entertainment and Haxan Films -- the banner behind "The Blair Witch Project" -- believe purchasers can't get enough horror, and instead of sell off foreign privileges, they have fully funded "Lovely Molly," formerly named "The Possession.""It is a calculated risk, but we believe we'll emerge far better by having an unencumbered film," stated Amber's Jane Fleming. "We believe that people can perform much more on worldwide sales than we had within the estimations."Amber and Haxan shot "Lovely Molly" in Maryland last fall, with "Blair Witch" director Eduardo Sanchez helming from the script he co-authored with Jamie Nash. Story explores the little difference between demonic possession and psychosis. Alex Walton, prexy of worldwide sales for Exclusive Media, agreed that you have a real appetite for product at Toronto this season. "Purchasers are wishing you will see an abundance of new material," Walton stated. "The buoyant mood from Cannes should continue."The important thing causes of optimism: As galleries focus much more of their assets on tentpoles, more viable purchasers have emerged for independent midlevel-budget projects. Aside from the traditional names (TWC, Fox Searchlight, Focus, The new sony Classics, Summit and Lionsgate), several other medication is expected to stay in this mixture, including FilmDistrict, CBS Films, Open Road, Relativity and Millenium. "There's likely to be lots of competition for finished films, with five, six as well as eight purchasers," stated UTA's Richard Klubeck. "The market's robust. I do not think each side has got the upper hands, though." Equity's returning."The marketplace and public are adopting these films, and banks are becoming much more comfortable supplying gap (financing) again," stated Rena Ronson, co-mind of UTA Independent Film Group. "We are seeing more high-internet-worth people coming to the scene trading sensibly too.Inch Overseas organizations for example Studiocanal are walking track of commercial projects, for example "Mess Tailor Soldier Spy.""It's real potential within the U.S.," stated Studiocanal topper Olivier Courson, "and it is clearly a European film." Digital gold coin is about the upswing. "Though they haven't counterbalance the decline in DVD sales, digital revenues are rising," stated Hal Sadoff, ICM's mind of worldwide and independent film. "In the last 2 yrs, VOD and streaming services for example Netflix are producing revenue and customers in a considerably faster pace than anybody expected."CAA's Micah Eco-friendly stated digital is really a better arena for independent marketers to contend with the main galleries versus. fighting together for retail shelf space. "VOD and digital would be the great equalizers in indies," Eco-friendly stated. Indies can access Hollywood's talent pool a lot more readily."Agencies have grown to be excellent at creating wise deals and becoming their customers to talk about within the after sales revenues, which enable independent films to obtain made," stated Basner. Traders possess a plan."You want to really engage in production," Courson stated, adding that you have a real audience for character pieces.Courson reported "True Grit" and "Black Swan" as good examples of worldwide hits that found auds who, he posits, "are actually tired of bigger, CGI blockbusters."Sadoff noted the studios' concentrate on tentpoles does not mean a focus on star automobiles."You are visiting a significant drop in studio films," Sadoff stated. "And individuals films tend to be more of the event instead of focusing on stars." Contact Dork McNary at dork.mcnary@variety.com
