Prohibition

'Prohibition'Produced by Florentine Films. Producers, Sarah Botstein, Ken Burns, Lynn Novick co-producer, Mike Welt company directors, Burns, Novick author, Geoffrey C. Ward.Ken Burns' PBS documentaries will always be stately, informative and chic, however the amount of resonance frequently comes from the extent that they think about, and fasten to, current trends and mores. "Prohibition" -- a five-hour, three-part collaboration with Lynn Novick, which PBS will air over successive nights -- works on counts, controlling to become very entertaining, full of amusing particulars and strongly related present day politics. If little else, "Boardwalk Empire" fans must notice like a study guide, however the bigger question of trying to legislate others' behavior appears as minty fresh like a Mojito. "Nothing so needs changing as other individuals habits" may be the Mark Twain quote that opens the beginning, properly subtitled "A Nation of Drunkards." The filmmakers go to recount how imbibing tremendous amounts was "as American as apple cake" within the nation's youth, before giving rise towards the temperance movement within the 1800s. Oddly enough, the push by "Drys" grew to become inextricably associated with women, a number of whom -- recently politically empowered -- later performed a job in causing the Volstead Act's demise. Gleam thread regarding hostility toward immigrants, along with a rift between metropolitan areas and rural towns. "Prohibition" author Geoffrey C. Ward offers an excellent ear for language, and also the roots of numerous familiar terms -- Skid Row, scofflaw, bootlegger -- are spread throughout. Gleam insightful scrumptious anecdotes, like how wealthy maker Adolphus Busch had Tiffany design custom home windows for that stable where he stored his horses. Part two stories how people brazenly circumvented what the law states, releasing a range of unintentional effects. The 3rd evening ("A Nation of Hypocrites") develops toward its eventual repeal -- all performed against a backdrop of colorful figures like Al Capone and George Remus who flouted enforcement. As always, Burns eschews the dishearteningly common documentary practice of pursuits (as near because he and Novick come is showing alcohol gradually put right into a glass), aesthetically illustrating the piece with still images and vintage video. Additionally they assemble the typical glittering variety of stars to lend their voices towards the cause, a group of historians and narrator Peter Coyote. The speaking heads include Daniel Okrent, the NY Times' former public editor, who authored a magazine around the subject. "When one for reds from the movement is people inspired by passion, and also the other is people inspired by commerce, passion will win," Okrent describes, in one of several findings with implications for present-day politics. Indeed, historians return repeatedly to the way the intransigence of "drys" unintentionally compromised their cause. In the event that seems to echo the present Tea Party movement, one suspects it's hardly any sort of accident. PBS has consistently permitted Burns to fresh paint on the giant canvas, and he's generally compensated that trust. Possibly foremost, his work (by extension, PBS) advantages of ahistorical pandering by shops like the History funnel, which makes it appear more rarefied and pristine in comparison. For the reason that context, it's worth hoisting a glass to "Prohibition."Camera, Buddy Squires editors, Tricia Reidy, Erik Ewers, Ryan Gifford music, Wynton Marsalis. 105 MIN.With: Daniel Okrent, Philip Bosco, Patricia Clarkson, Kevin Conway, Blythe Danner, Tom Hanks, Jeremy Irons, John Lithgow, Josh Lucas, Amy Madigan, Carolyn McCormick, Campbell Scott, Frances Sternhagen, Mike Waterston. REVIEW: Take Shelter Raises the Question, How Much Michael Shannon Is Too Much?

Casting Michael Shannon as a potential psychotic is a bit like crowing over the discovery that water is wet. And sure enough, in Jeff Nichols’s Take Shelter, Shannon gets his chance to go all bug-eyed and thin-lipped, to sweat through his clothes, to go ballistic on the neighbors, warning them that a big storm is coming and it’s going to wipe them out if they don’t get ready. Shannon has certainly cornered the cuckoo-bird market, and how you feel about Take Shelter will depend largely on how you respond to his patented nutcase technique. But in terms of overall filmmaking, writer-director Nichols — who previously made the 2007 Shotgun Stories — knows what he’s doing. He’s so adept at layering eerie semi-naturalistic details — skies that seem to be glowering at the whole human race, rain beating down with the fury of millions of tiny, punishing fists — that I wanted to stick with him to see where he was going with it all. His idea — that nature is both inside and outside of us, and in neither case is it something to trifle with — is unsettling at its core. Shannon is precisely the actor you’d first think to cast in this material — which may be the problem. Shannon’s character, a hardworking Midwestern family man named Curtis, has been having apocalyptic dreams and visions: Birds arrange themselves strange formations in the sky; yellow rain falls from above, as if God were expressing his dissatisfaction with mankind by taking one giant whiz all over the heartland. Is all of this really happening? Or is Curtis suffering the early stages of paranoid schizophrenia? His wife, Samantha (Jessica Chastain), is baffled by his behavior: First he turns the gentle, loyal family dog outside after dreaming that the dog attacks him; then he takes out a massive loan to spiff up the family’s tornado shelter in preparation for the big biblical showdown he knows is coming. Samantha is none too happy about either of those things, particularly the latter, considering the couple’s young daughter (Tova Stewart), who is deaf, has some upcoming heavy-duty medical expenses. The first third of Take Shelter is suitably unnerving. Nichols knows how to use the landscape (and CGI-enhanced weather) to build a sense of dread: The family’s modest house, somewhere out in rural Ohio, ought to be cozy and safe, but it seems isolated and exposed, a sitting target in an expanse of brownish grass and grayish sky. Even the more peaceful sequences — like the one in which Samantha and her young daughter gaze out the window while a rainstorm rages outside — are draped with ominous portent. But I can’t help wondering how Take Shelter would play with a different star, one who hasn’t already done the pop-eyed nutter routine to death. With Shannon, I feel I’ve seen it too many times before, and once — even just his turn in William Friedkin’s Bug — would have been more than enough. The economics of star casting aside, what would Take Shelter have been like with James McAvoy or Mark Wahlberg or Jake Gyllenhaal at its center? Even though the picture ends with a question mark, Shannon still manages to give the whole game away in the first frame — his very presence shows you where the movie is headed. On the other hand, Jessica Chastain, in one of her 1,001 movie roles this year, is far more restrained and more moving. She plays a character whose common sense is commingled with fear — and that, as it turns out, is probably the combination she needs to survive. Chastain is this year’s “it” girl for sure, but one of her gifts is her ability to portray regular people without playing down to them: In Take Shelter you never get the sense that she’s uglied herself up to play real folk, to get down with the people. She’s always effortlessly believable, whether her character is hustling in the kitchen to get breakfast together for her daughter or gazing into her husband’s eyes, trying to fathom the weird secrets he has locked in his cranium. Chastain’s face, whether she’s expressing wonder or anxiety, is the movie’s most reliable weather report and its most sensitive lightning rod: Looking at that face, you’d have no reason to believe that either God or his good pal Mother Nature could be angry with her. The suggestion that not even she can escape their wrath is what makes Take Shelter so disquieting. Imposing and Intense, Michael Shannon Stands Out

NEW YORK (AP) Sitting down for breakfast on a recent rainy NY day, Michael Shannon was uncertain about the prospect of food."They say you're supposed to eat breakfast," he said, pondering the option. "You don't eat breakfast, you'll go crazy."The possibility wasn't a remote one: Shannon has never shown a reluctance to do exactly that.In parts like the obsessively upright, self-flagellating federal agent on HBO's "Boardwalk Empire," the unbalanced, truth-telling neighbors' son of "Revolutionary Road," and in "Take Shelter," the actor's latest, a small-town Ohio family man increasingly haunted by apocalyptic nightmares, Shannon has unflinchingly followed his characters into paranoia, anxiety and derangement. In the end, coffee was judged sufficient, but nothing close to insanity followed.Shannon, 37, dressed casually in a Jesus Lizard T-shirt (music was his first love) and a flannel shirt, proved that it's not his imposing size 6'3" with a rock square jaw or his ability to dramatically come unhinged that has made him one of the most admired actors around. It's his underlying sensitivity his empathy for his characters and his attuned senses to his surroundings that more properly defines Shannon."The characters I play, it's not like they're all in the asylum, separate from the rest of us," he says. "I react to things. I think the world is an unsettling place. I have some anxiety about it. Maybe that comes through in what I do. But it's not something I'm attempting to do."The source of Shannon's paranoia in "Take Shelter," written and directed by Jeff Nichols, is the movie's mystery. Is his character losing it, like his mother did at his age? Or is the perceived threat real and outside his family?Shannon's performance, a carefully calibrated ball of tension and encroaching mania, has already earned him an underdog place in this year's Oscar prognostications for best actor. After years of character actor and stage work, it's the fullest cinematic display yet of Shannon: unadorned and still powerfully intense."I was really floored by his power and stillness," says Jessica Chastain, who plays his wife in the film. "He has this great source of energy, but the stillness contains this great power and intense emotion."Shannon grew up primarily in Lexington, Ky. His parents divorced when he was very young, so he spent time between Lexington (where his mother lived) and Chicago (where his father lived). He eventually moved to Chicago full-time and fell into the city's flourishing theater world. He particularly connected with then-nascent playwright Tracy Letts, starring in his "Killer Joe" and "Bug," in which he played a paranoid Gulf War veteran.Acting appealed to him for its freedom to behave in ways that would be considered inappropriate off-stage."It wasn't an attention thing," he says. "I never really gave a crap. I never really cared if people clapped or not. It's a way to travel. It's a form of travelling in another reality or circumstance."When he moved to Los Angeles to pursue film work, he found small roles in "Groundhog Day," ''Jesus' Son," ''Vanilla Sky," ''8 Mile" and a number of Jerry Bruckheimer films ("Pearl Harbor," ''Bad Boys II," ''Kangaroo Jack").Nichols was among the first to recognize Shannon's ability. Having seen footage of him at the writers' workshop Sundance Labs, he was hit by a lightning bolt: "This guy needs to be in every movie I make," he said to himself.Nichols cast him in his low-budget debut, 2007's "Shotgun Stories," a kind of tale of slacker revenge. Having now twice directed him, Nichols noted he never once saw Shannon with a script in hand, but he always knew it backward and forward."His goal is to put something honest up on screen," says Nichols. "It's funny: Though we don't talk about it beforehand or rehearse, as soon as I yell 'cut' and move on, that's when the conversation starts. 'How'd it go? How'd it do?'"In choosing his parts, Shannon is generally drawn to the material, comparing good writing to a Faberge egg that needs an actor's protection. In the case of "Take Shelter," he identified with Nichols' (and the script's) anxiety over starting a family. Shannon lives in Red Hook, Brooklyn, with his partner, actress Kate Arrington, and their 3-year-old daughter."In my 20s and the first third of my 30s, I lived a very gypsy lifestyle," says Shannon. "It didn't really matter where I lived. I didn't give a rat's ass. Now I have a home and a family. ... So it's on my mind."Shannon acknowledges he's been pigeonholed for playing disturbed characters and notes it's "something I struggle with.""I'm certainly not going to do a $5,000 movie about a serial killer ... about a guy who grinds people up or saws people," says Shannon. On "Boardwalk Empire," which is now airing its second season, his character, Nelson Van Alden has morphed from an Elliot Ness-type, to a religious zealot who punishes himself for his lust for a woman not his wife. In the show's first season, he had a remarkable scene where he baptized a double-crossing colleague, drowning him."When Michael commits, he commits," says "Boardwalk" creator Terence Winter. "We look at Nelson Van Alden as this religious zealot who maybe has a screw loose. Michael's approaching it from the inside out, as a real man."In the much anticipated upcoming Superman film, Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel," he'll play General Zod, the villain earlier played by Terence Stamp. Thinking of working that film, which is currently shooting, in comparison to "Take Shelter," Shannon says: "There's not a word for how different it is.""Even though six months after I shoot it, when I'm doing press, they'll say, 'So, another evil bastard,'" Shannon says. "I'll be like, 'Yeah, but it was interesting.' And I'll explain why it was interesting."Copyright 2011 Associated Press. All rights reserved. Watch the Impressionistic U.K. Teaser Trailer for Andrea Arnold's Wuthering Heights

“This is something of a pointillist Wuthering Heights, a story told more with dots and dashes than with long, bold strokes,” wrote Movieline’s Stephanie Zacharek after seeing Andrea Arnold’s bold take on the classic novel upon its Venice Film Festival debut. Now that the film’s first teaser has debuted, you can see for yourself what she meant, windswept longing gazes and foggy moors and elemental snatches of scenery and all. The teaser has but one spoken line — “You broke my heart… you killed me” — spoken by Kaya Scodelario, a British actress whom I’ve been curious to see more from since her days on the original Skins. She plays Cathy to James Howson’s Heathcliff, though we only see them in the teaser in glimpses along with their younger counterparts. A visceral sense of nature comes through; if ever a trailer used the sound of wind well, it’s this one. But between that, the dim natural lighting, and the flashes of poetic visual imagery (not to mention the near-square 1.37:1 aspect ratio) it’ll be a tough teaser to crack for most audiences, even the ones familiar with the novel. Verdict: Still: Andrea Arnold. Kaya Scodelario. A black Heathcliff. Moody landscapes. I’m totally in, whenever new distributor Oscilloscope sets its TBA 2012 date. [via First Showing]

Woodsy Harrelson in "Rampart" An positive Amber Entertainment and Haxan Films fully funded their horror film "Lovely Molly" instead of sell off foreign privileges. The 36th Toronto Film Festival will launch Thursday having a better outlook than in the prior three iterations. Riding a wave of strong sales that started captured, folks headed to Toronto are particularly more upbeat -- a clear, crisp turnaround from 2009 and 2008. A flurry of developments associated with Toronto is going to be revealed now, about the heels from the Weinstein Co.'s Tuesday announcement that it's developing a new label to create content to digital and traditional platforms concurrently, employing former Magnolia executives Tom Quinn and Jason Janego to mind the initiative. The duo will attend Toronto by having an eye toward obtaining films for that fledging label. Company needs to debut its first title underneath the new label within the first 1 / 2 of 2012."Individuals are recognizing that Toronto is a superb starting point selling new films," stated FilmNation Entertainment topper Glen Basner. "Equity is returning after standing on (the) sidelines, and that is a double-edged sword, as although it enables more movies to obtain made, it does not always mean more good movies. For the time being, the economic crisis made purchasers a lot more conservative, however the cycle can change.InchBecause the major galleries have significantly reduce their production slates, distribution pipelines have opened up to indies proffering low- to midrange-allocated films. Sundance, Berlin and Cannes already saw better-than-expected marketplaces, and following the stunning achievements of "Black Swan" and "The King's Speech," the summer time B.O. tallies for Woodsy Allen's "Night time in Paris" have bolstered the overall sense that this is an excellent time for you to be an indie. An eclectic mixture of game titles has emerged with elevated anticipation for sales throughout Toronto: horror projects "You are Next" and "The Awakening" relationship dramas "360," "Shame," "Take This Waltz" and "Winnie" police drama "Rampart" enivronmental thriller "The Hunter" and comedies "Peace, Love and Misunderstanding" and "Buddies With Kids."Amber Entertainment and Haxan Films -- the banner behind "The Blair Witch Project" -- believe purchasers can't get enough horror, and instead of sell off foreign privileges, they have fully funded "Lovely Molly," formerly named "The Possession.""It is a calculated risk, but we believe we'll emerge far better by having an unencumbered film," stated Amber's Jane Fleming. "We believe that people can perform much more on worldwide sales than we had within the estimations."Amber and Haxan shot "Lovely Molly" in Maryland last fall, with "Blair Witch" director Eduardo Sanchez helming from the script he co-authored with Jamie Nash. Story explores the little difference between demonic possession and psychosis. Alex Walton, prexy of worldwide sales for Exclusive Media, agreed that you have a real appetite for product at Toronto this season. "Purchasers are wishing you will see an abundance of new material," Walton stated. "The buoyant mood from Cannes should continue."The important thing causes of optimism: As galleries focus much more of their assets on tentpoles, more viable purchasers have emerged for independent midlevel-budget projects. Aside from the traditional names (TWC, Fox Searchlight, Focus, The new sony Classics, Summit and Lionsgate), several other medication is expected to stay in this mixture, including FilmDistrict, CBS Films, Open Road, Relativity and Millenium. "There's likely to be lots of competition for finished films, with five, six as well as eight purchasers," stated UTA's Richard Klubeck. "The market's robust. I do not think each side has got the upper hands, though." Equity's returning."The marketplace and public are adopting these films, and banks are becoming much more comfortable supplying gap (financing) again," stated Rena Ronson, co-mind of UTA Independent Film Group. "We are seeing more high-internet-worth people coming to the scene trading sensibly too.Inch Overseas organizations for example Studiocanal are walking track of commercial projects, for example "Mess Tailor Soldier Spy.""It's real potential within the U.S.," stated Studiocanal topper Olivier Courson, "and it is clearly a European film." Digital gold coin is about the upswing. "Though they haven't counterbalance the decline in DVD sales, digital revenues are rising," stated Hal Sadoff, ICM's mind of worldwide and independent film. "In the last 2 yrs, VOD and streaming services for example Netflix are producing revenue and customers in a considerably faster pace than anybody expected."CAA's Micah Eco-friendly stated digital is really a better arena for independent marketers to contend with the main galleries versus. fighting together for retail shelf space. "VOD and digital would be the great equalizers in indies," Eco-friendly stated. Indies can access Hollywood's talent pool a lot more readily."Agencies have grown to be excellent at creating wise deals and becoming their customers to talk about within the after sales revenues, which enable independent films to obtain made," stated Basner. Traders possess a plan."You want to really engage in production," Courson stated, adding that you have a real audience for character pieces.Courson reported "True Grit" and "Black Swan" as good examples of worldwide hits that found auds who, he posits, "are actually tired of bigger, CGI blockbusters."Sadoff noted the studios' concentrate on tentpoles does not mean a focus on star automobiles."You are visiting a significant drop in studio films," Sadoff stated. "And individuals films tend to be more of the event instead of focusing on stars." Contact Dork McNary at dork.mcnary@variety.com
